Hi

If you have DB on this same server where vCetner is installed so no issue at all

PROS:

vCenter will be protected by HA (on hardware level)

much easier to make an maintenance (only software maintenance)

all VMware features are available (vMotion, sMotion, Snaphsots, Clone, FT etc )

cheaper (save a hardware, space, power in server room)

CONST:

in case you loose all esx host you will loose vCenter VM too

if VM went down you always know where it is (as a VM it is not always a case) 🙂

Suggested configuration

Set restart priority to High for vCenter VM

exclude vCenter VM from DRS (in case if vCenter went down you will know on which server it was running before)

Create a resource pool with High resources and put there vCenter VM

Regarding P2V I wouldn't do that. As JDLangdon said - Create new VM, Move DB from old to new vCenter and install vCenter on fresh OS.

Where is the VC database stored - on the vCenetr server or a seperate database server? - If you are looking to upgrade to vSphere 5 at some point - I might take this as the time to insure you are using a supported database by moving the data to a supported database by vSphere 5 and doing a reinstall of vcenter -

If you find this or any other answer useful please consider awarding points by marking the answer correct or helpful

Personally, I wouldn't do the P2V.  What I would do is create a brand new VM's, do a fresh re-install of vCenter, and then migrate the database over.  That is, assuming that you are using a single server for both vCenter and the database.

Hi,

Vcenter Database is located on the same server. So please suggest  me.

However migration to vSphere 5 will take time.
