Now Vcenter 4.0 to Vcenter 5.0

Current scenario:

Vcenter 4.0 server with database on the same server.

Server windows server 2003 64bit R2. Database: oracle 10g, 10.2.0.4 R2 32bit( whether is it supported by vcenter 5.0?)

Not possible to create 64bit DSN as its not having 64bit drivers.

I would like to go for vcenter 5.0, How could I proceed?

Also if I have the license for vcenter 4.0, do I have to purchase new license for vcenter 5.0?

Also, I have over 100 hosts, so I can't migrate those all at the same time so, just wanted to know even if my vcenter got upgraded to vcenter 5.0 will my esx4.0 server remain function in the similar way as before and will it create any issue with the 4.0 licensing mechanism on vcenter 5.0?

I really need you peoples inputs on this and way I could move on. As of now these are the problems in my mind.

Thanks.

Hi

Vcenter 4.0 server with database on the same server.

Server windows server 2003 64bit R2. Database: oracle 10g, 10.2.0.4 R2 32bit( whether is it supported by vcenter 5.0?)

Not possible to create 64bit DSN as its not having 64bit drivers.

Here you go a link with supported DB

http://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-50/index.jsp?topic=/com.vmware.vsphere.upgrade.doc_50/GUID-18B7B4BB-C...

I would like to go for vcenter 5.0, How could I proceed?

  1. read documantation 🙂
    http://vmwaremine.com/2011/09/22/vsphere-5-documentation/
  2. your OS is supported so no needs to move to 64 bit OS, you can do inplace upgrade with vCenter DB upgrade, if your DB is supported then shpould be straight forward without complicationsing 64bit drivers.

Also, I have over 100 hosts, so I can't migrate those all at the same time so, just wanted to know even if my vcenter got upgraded to vcenter 5.0 will my esx4.0 server remain function in the similar way as before and will it create any issue with the 4.0 licensing mechanism on vcenter 5.0?

yes, no problem, you can migrate vCenter to vSphere5 without hosts upgrade, you will have your hosts fully operatonal during vCenter server upgarde, after upgrade vCenter will install new HA agent on hosts

One more thing, i have currently 32 bit DSN and I don't have 64bit DSN drivers coming to make a 64bit DSN entry. Could you please guide me in creating 64bit DSN please?

Also, If I have oracle installed with complete rdbms pack, i dont have to install client seperately so what to do in this case as they have provided this information in the link and also they haven'r mentioned about 32 or 64bit DB.

http://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-50/index.jsp?topic=/com.vmware.vsphere.upgrade.doc_50/GUID-18B7B4BB-C...

my db is 10.2.0.4 32bit, will it support?
