Moving vCenter 5 to another host.

Hi to all,

i have to move my actual vCenter 5 to another host. I have a cluster configured within with only 1 member host (at the moment). HA and DRS options are disabled.

The old vCenter 5 is installed on a virtual machine while the new will be installed on a physical server. No other strange configurations.

If i do a clean installation of vCenter on the new server, i manually create datacenter and cluster and add the host, will it work ? Do i have to stop virtual

machines or remove the host from vCenter first ? I have to do this job in an a production area and i have fear to do something wrong..

Thanks in advance...

Hi, Welcome to the forum

If you are doing a clean install and like to move the existing ESXi servers to this new vCenter server then best is to first remove them from the old vCenter server.

As long as your Virtual Machines stay with the host and your network doesn't change, then there should be no issue during transit. And since HA/DRS is disabled it will be a bit more easy.

Here is a small how-to: http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/datacenter/moving-an-esxi-host-to-a-new-vcenter-server/4178

  1. disconnect your host from vcenter
  2. then remove your host from vcenter
  3. install new vcenter.
  4. add the esxi host to the new vcenter.

you can skip steps 1 and 2 if you want.

nnothing will happens to your vms they keep running on your esxi host.
