Move virtualcenter to another computer inc database

Hey Everyone,

What is the best way to move our Virtual Center server to another server including the database?

The new server will have a different name and I assuming this will affect vmotion etc etc.

Any tips would be great.

Cheers,

Mark

  1. Remove your ESX servers from VC

  2. Stop the VC Server Service on the VC server

  3. Take the VC database offline and copy it to the new sql box

  4. On the new sql box attach the copied database

  5. Disable the license server and VC Server services on your old box

  6. Power off the old VC server if possible

  7. Ensure the sql account for your VC database has db_owner rights to the system database "msdb" and the VC database.

  8. Configure the ODBC settings to point to the database on the new SQL server etc.

  9. Install VC and license server etc on your new VC box

  10. After installation your database should be good to go - login and re-add your ESX boxes to VC and test.

If this doesn't work - you still have your old VC box and database etc.

Let me know how you get on.

Are you going to have another SQL server to host your VC database or is it going to be hosted on a new VC server (SQL Express?)
