Missing files from datastore

A recent backup (vizioncore) reported a failure on one of our virtual servers as the .vmx file was missing. Sure enough, looking in the datastore, there is no vmx file for this machine. Although the machine continued running, it now cannot be rebooted as the files are missing (there is no vmdk - virtual disk file either only the flat files for the 2 hard drives).

As changes were made to this server/data whilst it continued running, I don't really want to just restore the last backup that worked and lose the changes.

What would be the best way to recover this server as the flat files still exist which presumably will retain all the existing data?

Thanks in advance!

You could try this, there is a good chance it will work and if it doesn't no harm will be done.

Create a new disk of exactly the same size.

Move the descriptior vmdk file into the same dir as the existing vmdk

Rename the vmdk file to match the flat file and edit to make sure it is pointing correctly

Then try adding the disk to an existing VM to see if it works.

If so create a new VM with existing disk.
