Migrate vcenter database from standalone to always on OR mirrored database

I have vcenter server 6 database on a standalone sql server and would like to move it to a sql cluster that has always on group. But could not find any documentation as to whether always on is supported or what needs to be done to migrate it. Since one will be a principal database and the other secondary (non-readable), how does sql server agent job play out in such scenario?

Support for vSphere 3 runs out in 2/2020.

IIRC vmware never supports SQL Clustering for the VCDB. There was an old product named vCenter Heartbeat which offer HA for vCenter on Windows.

BUT.... you know that the VCSA (the vCenter Appliance) doesnt support external DB?

Thank you. We plan to upgrade to the appliance. However, the standalone sql server that it runs on currently needs to be taken down. Hence, inquired about moving it to always on.

If no alwaysOn then do you know if mirroring is supported (2008 r2)?
