Migrate vCenter 4.1 to another VM.

Hello All,

I have a vcenter server that manage two esx hosts, the Vcenter Verssion: 4.1 and ESXs: 4.1 also.

The Vcenter is installed on a Windows 2003 VM and the Vcenter database is SQL 2005 Express (defualt).

I need to migrate the vcenter to win 2008-R2 OS and the database from SQL express to sql 2008-r2.

is this is posible? if yes is there any procedures or step-by-step to do this?

Regards,,

Ahmed Salah

Hello.

This can be done. Check out the vSphere Upgrade Guide and refer to Microsoft's documentation for moving the SQL database.

Good Luck!

The datamigration tool included makes this process quite easy (which is documented in the Upgrade Guide). KB 1021635 - Migrating an existing vCenter Server database to 4.1 using the Data Migration Tool. It will only migrate the database from SQL Express to SQL Express, though.

If you want to move the database to a full SQL 2008 R2 database instead of SQL Express, that is also described in detail in the Upgrade guide.
