Memory limited by parent resource or current host.

The memory on some VMs is limited by the parent resource or current host.   The environment is vCenter 5.0 and ESXi 4.1.

These VMs have 4GB, 6GB or 8GB memory set and resource allocation is unlimited.

A Cluster has been set up.  No Resource Pool has been set up.  Yet when I look at the Resource Allocation for the Cluster I see that the VMs have a % Shares and a Worst Case Allocation.   The performance monitoring tool we use, is alerting us to Memory Allocation versus Limit issues.

There is plenty of memory on the ESXi hosts . So why would these VMs be constrainted?   Do I have set up a Resource Pool?

Appreciating any inputs.

One more thing -- when I look at the Resource Allocation for a given VM:

Resource Settings:

  Reservation  0.00MB

  Limit            4.00 GB

  Configured    6.00 GB

So why can't I get the 6.00 GB?
