We recently purchased two copies of ESX Enterprise and the Virtual Center 2.5 software. I noticed that I'm able to search for and add a vmware-server node in addition to my ESX nodes, but I get an internal error after it adds it to the inventory. Am I missing something? Will Virtual Center do this for me? Is there a client side configuration that I need to setup?
Thanks for any help!
I think you need to purchase an add-on. See:
At this point VC 2.5 is not able to manage VMware Server hosts (see page 2 - http://www.vmware.com/pdf//vi3_35/esx_3/r35/vi3_35_25_compat_matrix.pdf). To manage VMware Server 1.x hosts you wolud require VirtualCenter 1.4. That's supposed to change with VMware Server 2.0 (i.e. it would be managed with VC 2.x along with ESX hosts) but I haven't seen anything definitive on that.
I did see the add-on but my interpreation was that it was for use outside of an ESX model... So if I didn't own ESX but wanted to manage my servers in something like a VC environment than I'd get the management server for Vmware-server...
I had thought about using VMWare-Server 2.0 to see if that worked or not.. I'll give it a go...
Yes, you'd have to get VC 1.4 specifically to manage your VMware Server hosts. I did try an early beta of Server 2.0 with VC 2.5 and it would error out when trying to add the VC agent. Might be worth searching the VMware Server forum to see if that has changed or is even supposed to work.
