I am trying to convince someone to use a full version of SQL instead of using MSDE for the VC 2.0 database in a production environment. Can someone please help me provide as much technical information about the limitations of MSDE in a production environment?
DB Size limit
Vmware support for MSDE
ESX hosts limit
Etc...
MSDE has a 2GB DB limit
SQL 2005 Express has a 4GB DB limit
Dave
But they both aren't supported in production mode by Vmware right?
The conclusion in http://www.vmware.com/community/thread.jspa?threadID=67175 is that they (msde/2005 express) are not supported for production purposes, only in a test environment. SQL2005SP1 is supported.
This document is a bit old, but states that MSDE is only supported for demo and testing. MSDE was throttled to limit performance and for SQL 2005 Express, besides the 4 GB database limit, it is also limited to 1 GB RAM and 1 CPU.
If you have an existing database server, you could host the VC database on it. You're not restricted to running it on the VC server.
