Lost connectivity between ESX host and VC server

Hi Friends

I have 4 Hosts in my DRS/HA cluster and 1 VC Server. Most of the times one ESX host in the cluster shows a yellow exclamation icon saying that not responding under VI Client. I checked the ip communication between esx host and vc server is ok. I can ping from both of the sides. Is there any other way to check the communication? I checked the vmware-vpxa and mgmt-vmware services are ok on the esx host. What could be the reason for this?

Check or post these logs for possible indicators

cat /var/log/vmkernel.log

cat /var/log/vmware/vpx/vpxa.log

and use

esxtop

to the check the host resource utilization

Most issues are related to DNS. All ESX hosts as well as the VC server must be able to resolve the DNS-name to IP (and vice versa) of each other host in the cluster.

Check the vpxa logs on the not-responding host for errors (/var/log/vmware/vpx/vpxa*.log)

It is working now. I did not do anything. there was nothing unusual in the logs.

Thanks for the replies friends at least I got some idea for next time.

Issues like this of "I didn't do anything, now it's working" are most certainly a DNS issue.

Make sure that your /etc/nsswitch.conf reads:

hosts: dns files

NOT

hosts: files dns

I bet your problems will go away and stay away.
