Linux template customization

for Windows VM, use syspreps to do customization. for Linux VM, i remember i can install debugfs to do customization. but now, how to install the debugfs or changefs in VCMS host? i can download debugfs/changefs from http://www.vmware.com/download/vi/open_source.html.

is there any document about this? thanks in advance.

If your linux guest OS is certified (Suse ES or RHEL) you wont need anything special to enable guest customization under Virtual Center. It will just work.

my guest OS is RHEL4 update4, but the customization radio button is grayed out, just like when syspreps is not installed.

Yes, you are correct. need not anything special. in my test enviroment, i can deploy from RHEL3, and can't from RHEL4.

the message is:

warning: customization is not supported for guest operating system 'rhel4guest'

but where can i find which linux edition can be customized by ESX(in which document)?

This is an old thread but I'm hoping someone will have an answer for me. Since customization is supported on SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10, has anyone tried it with Open Enterprise Server 2? It's based on SLES 10.1, so I thought it might, althouth I know OES2 isn't supported by VMware.

I'm interested to know about OES 2 as well. Although technically OES2 is a set of addon products on top of SLES10, so you'd still be doing the basic configuration of a SLES10 box. OES1 was a different operating system from SLES9. This is no longer the case with OES2.

I decided to create the template as straight SLES 10 and I'll install the OES components afterwards. Customization worked fine with this setup.

Will there be any plan for VMware to support Red Hat AS4 or 5 server in the future?

I don't see how there is much difference between these operating systems as far as configuring network parameters.
