Hi All,
Just trying to get my head around sysprep, I understand sysprep is run on the creation of a desktop clone? Is this the only time it's run? Wondering if it's run on a desktop recompose, we may need to adjust our sysprep customization and don't fancy having to have every desktop clone recreated for it to apply.
Regards,
Ross
Recompose is used for Snapshots, when you want to consolidate/integrate the snapshots. Sysprep is used during cloning or creating a new VM. Primary purpose of the Sysprep tool is to strip away all the unique characteristics of a windows system and return it to the base (initial OOBE) configuration. This ensures that there is no conflict in your environment/network after you clone a VM or deploy from a template. For Templates you will need to convert to VM and then run sysprep. Then save it back to template. For Cloning you can do it and then clone the VM.
Hope this helps!
Thanks for the reply, so I would run a sysprep against the main golden image and then take a snapshot and recompose from that? I was getting confused because I kept reading about sysprep being installed on the vCenter server but have since learnt Windows 7 has this pre-installed so no need to install anything on the vCenter server, is this correct?
Sysprep will be run on a VM and not an template or when cloning. If you have a golden template you will need to convert it to a VM and then run it.
I beleive all MS OS after Win2003 came with Sysprep pre-installed installed. If you are using OS after Win2003 then no, nothing has to be installed.
