Is it possible to migrate VMs and maintain resource pool location?

Is it possible to migrate VMs and maintain resource pool location? I dont see an option for this but their should be.

I have 30-40 virtual servers per server and app. 10 different resource pools and it is a pain to migrate off to update

hosts.

If I put the server in maintenance mode and VMs auto migrate will that maintain resource pool locations?

Thanks,

Rick

You are migrating the VM in a ESX in the same DRS cluster?

In this case the VM remain in the same resource pool.

Maybe automated migration via putting host in maintenance mode (migration was much slower for me in auto mode then manually

selecting and migrating) maintains resource pool location but I tested a manual migration and the VM is moved to the "root" folder

Very strange.

Which version of ESX and VC do you have?

Are the ESXs in the same DRS cluster?

If your vms are in a resource pool under a DRS cluster, then even after migration the hosts will be under the same resource pool (Put one of the hosts in maintenance mode). But if there isnt any DRS cluster, then there is no option to migrate the resource pools and settings along with Vms.

Putting a host in Maintenance will migrate to current resource pools but the migration took 2-3 times longer then

a manual migration.

It does not look like there is a way to maintain Reource pool location with a manual migration. You have to select

a resource location during the Migration wizard and no option for maintain current if you select multiple VMs to migrate

at once. I guess this a feature enhancement request at this point

No other idea.

In a DRS cluster VM position in resource pool must remain the same after a VMotion.
