Integrating VSphere 5 and Vcenter 5

I am a little new to VMware's line of produects so I might be missing something obvious here but I am unable to get these 2 products to communicate. I do not see any configuration utility in the Start Menu after installing Vcenter server and when I click on "manage this host through vmware vcenter" in Vsphere I am broguht to a download page that prompts me to isntall an older version of the products. Any help would be appriciated.

Welcome to the Community - You are missing a key piece - the vSphere Client. This can be installed from the installation disk or by pointing a web browser either at the ESXi host or bCenter server and download from there. For the next steps I would take a looke at the Installation and Setup guide found here - http://www.vmware.com/support/pubs/vsphere-esxi-vcenter-server-pubs.html

Thanks for the reply. I have already installed VCenter server 5 and the VSphere web client ( Server ) from the VMware VCenter Installation disk as well as VSphere 5. My problem is that I cannot link VSphere to VCenter for management purposes. All of these products are installed on the same machine now since this is an evaluation. I have found what looks like a good article here: http://virtualisedreality.com/2011/07/15/vsphere-5-new-vsphere-web-client/ that says to link the VCenter to the VSphere I need to logon to the VSphere at https://127.0.0.1:9443/admin-app. Unfortunately I get a "page cannot be displayed" error. Trying to do this through the installed VSphere client vs the webpage just takes me a Vmware page to download the products I already have.

Hi Owenb9,

Did you find an answer to this, I am having exactly the same issue. I have reinstalled vCenter 5 twice on two different machines and then the webclient component and after this I cannot access the registration page.

I have tested the ports using telnet, no response when webclient is not installed and after it is installed I get a response on both ports 9090 and 9443. Also tried changing ports to no avail.

I can't see anything running on the server other than vCenter which I installed but the company does use Sophos and I noticed after adding to the domain a process called sarcli, not sure if its related, you don't use Sophos at your place do you? Maybe a long shot but thought it was worth asking!

Thanks,

Dan

Sorry Owenb9 just re read your original question, I think you have come across the same error as me without necessarily needing to!

You use the vSphere Client (not webclient) to manage the vCenter server primarily. WebClient is just a web based version (slightly reduced features) which came in with version 5 release.

If you use the download link, it should give you the viclient installer. Install then connect to vcenter server. You can then add your hosts / vms.

Hope this helps,

Dan

It turns out my problems was lack of resources on the Virtual Machine I had Vcenter and Vsphere installed on. I Increased the available RAM from 1GB to 2GB and the webclient started working. I am limited on the hardware I can use for this test so I have been conservative in the resources I was allocating. Apparently a little too much so Smiley Happy.

I had the exact same issue with the page not opening up after installing the vSphere web client. After reading this post I also had 1 GB of RAM assigned to my vCenter Server. Bumping it up to 2GB solved the issue for me. I can now connect to https://127.0.0.1:9443/admin-app

Here is a nice little vid I ran across that shows how to install the web client if anyone needs it.

Also I was unaware that the latest adobe flash also had to be installed on vCenter 1st as well as Mozilla firefox? I am just adding this because I found out after the fact that these were prerequisites for this install.

Thanks!
