Installing the Update Manager plugin on my laptop

I installed the VIC on my laptop and my colleague's laptop and the downloads autcomatically started. Does this mean the patches are being downloaded somewhere on my laptop?

Should I have installed the PLUGIN on my Virtual Center Server first? Does it matter? If so, should I uninstall and then reinstall the plugin on my VC Server first?

The patches aren't being downloaded to your laptops. The plug-in only lets you manage Update Manager from within vCenter. The actual install of Update Manager on the server will determine the location of the patch downloads.

Don't worry about which order you installed the plug-ins in. Just install it in the places you need it in order to manage your environment.
