Installing Virtual center

Hi

I have esx 3.5 installed in a HP server. I am managing the esx host from my laptop through VI client. However I want to manage it through Virtual Center. Though the installation of VC is done i dont see any program icon for that. Can anybody help me please?

Thanks

you use the same VIC you manage the ESX host with as you would manage VC. With VC you login using domain credentials.

Server: VC Server name

Username: domain\username

Password: domain password

By default when you install VC, the local admin group of the VC's host server has Administrator rights in VC

hope this helps

You use the same client but instead of logging on to the ESX server you use the hostname of the Virtual Center server in the logon window.

Hi

Thanks. this gives a bit of idea. But does that mean the vc has to be installed in one of the vm which is in the esx environment. I have a single host and it is for home lab. What major advantage do we get in a VC which we dont get in the VI and also is template and clone not permitted in VI as I dont see any option there.

Cheers.

If you have only one host, VC probably is not needed. VC gives your DRS, HA, Vmotion, templates and clones, etc

So, if you want to create templates, you will need VC. There is a way to create clones via command line, but I don't know how.

You actually install a service - as others have indicated to access you will use the VI Client to interact and manage virtual center -by default the local administrators group of the windows machine you intalled VC on will have administrator access to your VC environemnt -

Hi,

If you have installed VC to your laptop, the icon for Virtual Infrastructure Client will be the way you connect to Virtual Center. Instead of supplying the name/IP of the host ESX, use LOCALHOST or the IP address of your laptop. As the previous responders have noted, the real benefit to Virtual Center begins when you have multiple VMs, and really gets usefull with multiple ESX hosts and their child VMs.

cheers,

John

Hi Guys

Thanks for your help. I could connect to the VC now and the reason I prefer VC over VI is for clone and template.

Thanks
