Installing VMware tools on PCLinuxOS guest

Jump to solution

Hi all,

I just started playing around with VMware player (version 6.0.3). I made a new virtual machine and installed PCLinuxOS on it. I want to now install VMware tools on to this guest, so I click Player -> Manage -> Install VMware tools. However nothing seems to happen and I have waited for over an hour. When I click Player -> Manage I see it says (Downloading VMware tools). Both the host and virtual machine guest have internet access. Is there anything that could be blocking it from downloading or any way I can troubleshoot the issue? Thanks so much for your help - J

Are you running VMware Player on Windows or Linux, host ? If you're running on WIndows host, download the file: http://softwareupdate.vmware.com/cds/vmw-desktop/player/6.0.3/1895310/windows/packages/tools-linux-9...

Extract the .EXE file and run the .EXE file on host it will silently install the VMware Tools ISO Images in the working directory of VMware Player.

After that, try install VMware Tools again on VM, just go to menu Player -> Manage -> Install VMware Tools.

Thanks for replying, when I look down the link you sent me do I need to use 'Core' or 'Packages'? I'm new to this so what I did was download vmware-tools-linux-9.6.2-1895310.x86_64.component.tar from CDS Repository - /var/www/public/stage/session-19/cds/vmw-desktop/player/6.0.3/1895310/linux/package... and un tarred it but not sure what to do next.

The instructions on the second link still require you to install VMware tools via the VMware player GUI, which does nothing in my case. I'm not sure what to download manually from the first link you posted. Thanks for the help though.
