Installing VMtools fails

Installing the VMtools fails, just nothing happens. Any suggestions on how to force this, so VMtools will get installed?

If this is a Windows box, it is fairly common that autorun is not set. Go through explorer and see if you see a setup.exe on the CD ROM and launch that.

What is the guest operating system you try to install the tools to?

And if it is Linux, the menu option "Install VMware tools..." only attaches the vmware tools iso image to your virtual CD-ROM. You have to mount it manually and install them via rpm or .tar file.
