Installation of VCenter 2.5 U3 on 64-bit system

I'm trying to install Virtual Center 2.5.0 U3 on a Windows 2003 std. R2 64-bit system.

I have also installed netfx64.exe.

When I start the installation I will get the following error:

The following components can not be installed on this operating system:

VMware Virtual Center Server

VMware Update Manager

I'm only able to install the Virtual Infratructure Client and the Converter Enterprise.

Can anyone help me about this issue?

VirtualCenter 2.x installation is not supported on 64‐bit operating systems.

although it isn't supported, it is possible: http://ictfreak.wordpress.com/2008/01/04/how-to-run-the-new-vi-client-on-windows-x64/

I wouldn't recommend it though.

vCenter != VI Client

The supportet combination can be found in VMware Infrastructure Compatibility Matrixes (on the last pages).

The article references an old "hack" to get the VI Client from 3.5 (w/no updates) mostly running on 64-bit Windows (it always had a few issues with hanging, etc.). Update 1 and later have full 64 bit support so you no longer needed the "hack"

This is something different than trying to install VC itself on 64 bit Windows...

I found that compatibility matrix. But I think this table on page 11 isn't actual.

Because the table say NO to VI-Client on Windows 2003 64-bit but with U3 there's no problem to install it on the 64-bit OS.

What I do not understand is for Virtual Center the row "Image Cust." which was said YES to 64-bit Windows 2003 OS?

So can anyone explain me that?

Does anyone knows, if VMware is working on 64-bit support for Virtual Center Server component and Virtual Update Manager on 64-bit Windows 2003 OS?

Thanks for any reply.

I think you're right Markus that the doc is out of date on page 11; VI Client 2.5u1 or later definitely supports 64 bit Windows (KB 1004093 confirms it).

The "Image Cust" column means that image customization is supported for the OS version. Windows 2003 64-bit says "Yes", so it means that you could create a customization specification and then apply it when you deployed a new Windows 2003 64 bit VM from a template (assuming you had put the 64 bit version of the sysprep files in the right location on the VC server, etc.).

At VMWorld they announced a port of Virtual Center to Linux, however I don't recall them mentioning anything about 64 bit Windows support (though you'd think it would be something that was being worked on along with support for running it on Windows 2008)...

I think the column "Image Cust" means the ability of perform the customizing of the OS in a VM when you deploy one from a template or when cloning.
