How to make snapshot of a VM with prohibitively large 'Mapped Raw LUN' disk?

We have a fileserver VM, which has a 7TB SAN disk attached as 'Mapped Raw LUN'.
I am unable to make a snapshot from this VM due to the large disk (a D:\ disk in Windows OS, non-system, data only). Is there any way to make snapshot process to "ignore" this disk in order to allow creation of snapshot of reasonable size? Would changing the connection method help?

(The same problem appears to be with Symantec BackupExec VMware Agent, also it cannot make backup of the VM without taking the 7TB data along. The data is, however, separately backed up via BackupExec Windows Agent.)

How about changing the RDM LUN to Independent-Persistent mode? This way it will be excluded in snapshot operation.
