How to accomplish SAN failover with vCenter? Either automatically or manually.

Hey guys-

Wasn't to sure where this question would go, but figured this would be the best place.  We currently have an environment that consists of two VMware ESXi Hosts (version 4.1.0u3) being managed by a vCenter Server; at the moment the pair of Hosts are not in a cluster.  We most recently implemented two EMC VNXe Appliances which are now running replication between the both of them, but located in two separate Datacenters.  The EMC's are our primary datastore's and house all of our production VMs, data, ISO's, software, and etc.  The vCenter Server manages these Datastores and is capable of accessing both Datacenters, to which the bandwidth is sufficient for what I am trying to accomplish here.

What I am looking to accomplish is kind of a "true full backup" so to speak.  So if our Primary SAN blew up or went down, we could re-point the ESXi Hosts to the Secondary SAN located in our other Datacenter.

By either manual intervention or it occurring automatically, but eventually we would like to have it occur automatically (if possible) or at least with the least amount of manual intervention necessary!

What would it take to accomplish having a setup like this (from a VMware perspective)?  Would I need an additional product from VMware?  How does one go about setting this up (given my scenario)?

What are the options that I have with attempting to accomplish this type of setup?

Any information, links, or suggestions from experience or best practice would be greatly appreciated!

The product from VMware that you need is VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager: VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager: Disaster Recovery Automation Solution | United States

Take a look on link that I provided, including the video, and let me know any additional doubts.

Richardson-

Thanks for your reply, I read through some of he spec sheets and did watch the video.

My question is this, SRM sounds like it is for exactly that - Datacenter Recovery.  However, we do not have this setup - no other virtual hosts in the other DC yet.  So our specific interest just lies in that of the "storage failover".

With that being said, would SRM still be the only way to achieve this (via a product-based solution)?

Are there any other (manual) options that could exist?

Without SRM and all redundant environment (ESXi hosts and vCenter) you can still achieve SAN failover, but this will be a completely manually process.... you will need unregister virtual machines located on failed datastore/volume, mount the replicated volumes and register virtual machines now residing on new mounted (replicated copy) volume.
