How can you increase the memory in the VCenter VM?

I just have ESXi Essentials 4.1. I have to shut down the VM in order to increase the memory and if I shut it down, then I can no longer manage the VMs (of which it is one).  I did not have a hands on part in the initial installation and configuration of the environment but can try to provide as much additional information as needed.
