For VMware vCenter Server 5.1 and 5.5, virtual machines can only be created with hardware version 9 and 10 from the vSphere Web Client. However, you are able to upgrade to hardware version using the vSphere Client.

I think its one of the steps to get people to use the web client. After 5.1 release VMware is strongly advising everyone to start using web client. Like how you cannot edit VM's with HW 10 can't be editted using vSphere client.

If you need to create a VM with version 9 the only way i see it is to create a VM with version 8 and upgrade it Smiley Happy
