Flash 18 WTF

So my IE 11 updated to the embedded Adobe Flash Player 18 in the last day or two, and now this is happening with the Web Client whenever I right-click...

Rather irritating.  I know this wasn't happening previously and doesn't happen under Chrome, which has Flash 17 PPAPI installed.  I have a feeling this is going to be a patch for vCenter, or is there some way I can turn off the Flash right-click menu on my machine?  I searched for info on turning off the menu, but didn't find anything that doesn't require modifying the SWF files.

So I got back to looking into this a bit more, and I found that changing the IE rendering engine to 10 or lower in the Developer Tools console removes the right-click menu from the Flash web interface.  Adding the site to Compatibility Mode does not remove the right-click menu.  If I could find a way to force the site to render as IE 10 all the time, that would fix it.  At this point, I'm going to switch to Chrome until VMware replaces the Flash interface with HTML5 (or upgrade to Windows 10, although I don't have confirmation from anyone in my org that the problem doesn't happen under IE or Edge in W10).

To add more info to this, apparently Flash 18 is causing a whole lot of issues across the Interwebs.  Another example is that the Google Chromecast extension in the Chrome browser can't cast Flash videos in full-screen mode anymore under Flash 18.  Being that Google is saying that they're on the hook to fix this, I suspect that this is going to be the same for VMware.

I have not experienced this behavior yet as i'm on 10, but these days with all the differences in browsers.  I have to use an army of browsers of firefox, IE, chrome etc.  Have you reported a bug yet to vmware?  I'll see if I can get a VM machine up and test see if I get the same result.

Anjani,

As far as I know the Web Client is still using flash so that wouldn't resolve his issue.

of course vSphere Web Client is still Flash based, similarly, the VDP configuration is, as well as file level recovery client for VDP and so on.

Considering the fact that recently there have been numerous exploits, and Mozilla currently blocks Flash generally, the question is when VMWare will come up with a good alternative.

Wouldn't HTML5 give enough to implement a flash free Web client?

Forgot I had this out there.  Anyways to update, so far I'm not seeing it on any browser under Windows 7, and the machine I'm seeing it on is running Windows 8.1.  I updated vCSA to 6.0.0b this morning, and now I get this...

Very strange.  I'm going to have some folks who use the Web Client on Windows 8.1 and/or 10 with the IE 11 + Flash 18.0 combination try this out and see if they have the same problem.  That would either limit it to a specific Windows version or my specific machine.  If it's reproducible, then I'll send it to VMware as a bug.  But Flash 18.0 + Windows 7 + IE 11 appears to work fine.

So I have a solution to this if anyone is interested.....

basically,  you need to run your IE11 in enterprise mode.

In order to do this....you need to enable enterprise via GPO....

enterprise.png

Once enable, go to your web client url login page..... then go to tools in IE11 and turn on enterprise mode

This will allow you to now right click freely!!!!

works for me.

and the great thing is.... IE11 enterprise mode will save your page settings so returning to the web client page will always run enterprise mode!!!

Enjoy
