We are running ESX 3.5u3 with VC 2.5.
We have a guest that has a 1TB vmdk on a LUN which has around 160gb free. The LUN has a block size of 8mb.
We have shut down the guest, and when trying to expand the vmdk by just 20gb, we get an error in VC that says "A general system error has occurred. Internal Error."
Any idea's?
Do you have some snapshots?
Be also sure that free space if right.
Use vdf -h
Andre
Thanks for the reply.
Yes space is fine. No there are not any snapshots.
What block size have you used for VMFS volume?
Andre
8mb
You have the same error also if you try to hot expand (with VM powered on)?
Andre
Yes, that is when trying when it's powered on.
Have tried powering it off and then trying the below:
1. I tried the disk extension using vmkfstools command, and the error message returned is as follows and is the same on more than 1 ESX Server (due to vmotion and trying it again):
"Failed to extend disk: Device or resource busy (1048585)"
2. The vmdk as seen through putty, shows as 1,095GB, yet in VI, it shows as 1,020GB
Different size means that you have create/modify disks from command line.
In this case VC doen't not know what you're doing.
To try to fix, just power off VM, remove disk (without delete it), then re-add again.
Always with VIC connected to VC.
Then try to expand disk with VIC.
