Email Alerts for DRS Migrations

Anyone know if we can setup email alerts so that I am aware when VMs are being migrated? If so, how?

I don't believe this is possible using VC currently.

Do you want to be notified in real-time or is it sufficient to get a summary report every so often?

Either one would be cool ...

Do you know a way to make this work?

Hello,

Since DRS is really a vMotion you can setup alarms to send you email when a vMotion begins and when a vMotion ends. This is a state change within the VM.

I think that is as close as you can get to being notified when DRS fires.

Best regards,

Edward

I cut my teeth on the SDK, Perl, and the VIPerl Toolkit by writing an event reporting script. You run the script with a list of events that you are interested in and a time period and it will print/email you a report.

It was designed to be scheduled at a regular interval (e.g. daily, weekly). I created it to monitor things like permission changes or session logins, but it can be used to monitor any VI3 event. In your case, the event class you are interested in is called:

DrsVmMigratedEvent

If you want to give it a go, you can get the VIPerl Toolkit here (it's in beta):

http://www.vmware.com/beta/viperltoolkit/index.html

The script and more detailed directions are available on the project's Sourceforge site:
