The installation guides indicates vCenter and Site Recover Manager 4 only support SQL Server 2005 express. I'm wondering if I can use SQL 2008 R2 express.
I'm backing off from using a full, remote, installation of SQL server at my DR site (as part of our DR plan the sql server will be renamed which would break vcenter\SRM just when I want it!.)
For cost reasons I'd like to use SQL Server Express (and it can handle the number of esx hosts \ vm's we would need to run). I'd like to use 2008 express since its availble as a 64-bit installation (as far as I can tell 2005 express is only 32-bit)
Anyone using SQL 2008 Express?
Thanks
Andrew
Hi,
Yes, you can use SQL 2008 Express edition for the sql database installation. But be aware that this has the DB size limitation. If your DB size may reach to it's limit then it may cause you issue in the future.

Well thats good to here.
I don't think I need to loose sleep about db size. my vcenter db is 520mb whilst my srm db is 35mb. SQL express 2008 r2 is good for 10GB
Sure it does work, and you can get express in 32bit and 64bit versions.
But vCenter on SQL 2008 express is it supported? I don't find it in vSphere compatibility matrix (http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/r40/vsp_compatibility_matrix.pdf)
