Do you have to shut down or restart a VM not matter what when going to Vsphere 4.0

I have a quick question after presenting this information:

In the upgrade document I see the following :

Use vCenter Update Manager to upgrade your virtual machines. vCenter Update Manager ensures that

the VMware Tools upgrade and the virtual hardware upgrade happen in the correct order to prevent loss

of your network connectivity. vCenter Update Manager also performs automatic backups of your virtual

machines in case you need to roll back after the upgrade. You can upgrade clusters without powering off

the virtual machines if Distributed Resource Scheduler is available for the cluster.

Q: Is this telling me that somehow VUM will update vmware tools and the hardware v7 and the VM won't require a REBOOT?

Q: If so how does it do that, migrate the VM and install while migrating?

No, there will definitely be reboots required. The Update Manager just does the updates the correct way and saves you some time.

Can the hardware v7 and vmware tools be upgraded with a VM turned off using manual method and VUM?

To upgrade the tools, the VM will need to be powered on. To upgrade the virtual hardware, the VM will need to be powered off. You can do either manually or use VUM to automate it totally or partially.

That's very useful information and answers my question. I'm actually going to power off all the vm's and take a netapp snap shot as a backup prior to upgrade.. So they'll be off and ready if the ESX 3.5u4 to 4.0 U1 goes well then I'll update tools on all of them and then hardware v7 next! Power them em up and test the CD - mount issue mentioned by another user!
