DSN pointing to unsupported ODBC driver

  • 1.  DSN pointing to unsupported ODBC driver

    Posted Jul 01, 2009 01:27 AM

    Hi all,

I am about to install vcenter server. I created a 32-bit ODBC as specified in the manual but when I start my install it says the my instance has an unsupported ODBC driver.

My OS is Win2k8, 64 bit Standard.

    Any thoughts?

Also, on a side note, where exactly can I find VMware License server? I can't find it on download site

Please consider marking my answer as "helpful" or "correct"

Not sure regarding your ODBC error - however if you are trying to download a license server for vCenter 4.0 - there isn't one (it's built into vCenter).

Actually - have you got the SQL Native Client driver installed? This is required.

Weird. According to page 56 of the upgrade guide

"vCenter Server 4.0 does not require a license server to manage ESX 4.0/ESXi 4.0 hosts. vCenter Server 4.0

requires a license server to manage ESX 3.x/ESXi 3.5 hosts.

If you do not have a license server installed and you need one, download the VMware License Server from the

    VMware Web site"

Maybe it is there once I installed vcenter then but that means I have to sort out that DSN problem first :smileywink:

    Cheers

Yes the licensing has changed with vCenter 4.0 (no longer use license files, built-in to vCenter etc). If you still have ESX 3.X hosts you can download the License Server from here....

However you can't install the license server on a Windows 2008 server.

Do you have a sql native client driver installed? If so, what version?

I am using the SQL server client (SQLSRV32.DLL) version 6.00.600.18005 that comes with w2k2008.

    Cheers

That's the wrong one - download the SQL Native Client Driver

Configure your DSN to use this driver and it should work.

I have the same error when trying to install vCenter Server 4.0

"The DSN is pointing to an unsupported ODBC driver. Pleas re-configure your DSN to use one of the supported drivers."

What is the right ODBC driver for Windows Server 2003 and where do I find it?

    Thx!

your post above does not take me to anything for Widows 2003. It's for Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Feature Pack, August 2008.

Do you know where I can find a similar one for Windows 2003?

    Thx!

If you look at the supported OS's..... you'll see that it supports Windows 2003.....

"Supported Operating Systems: Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2; Windows Server 2008; Windows Vista Service Pack 1; Windows XP Service Pack 3"

The client also supports a range of SQL database versions....

"Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Native Client (SQL Native Client) is a single dynamic-link library (DLL) containing both the SQL OLE DB provider and SQL ODBC driver. It contains run-time support for applications using native-code APIs (ODBC, OLE DB and ADO) to connect to Microsoft SQL Server 2000, 2005, or 2008"

    Ok, I see.

    That worked. Thx!

For other who read this and may not know I had to of course delete my current ODBC entries and recreate them using the "SQL Server Native Client 10.0" as the driver, which is listed in the "Create New Data Source" dialog.

    Thanks Todorojo,

deleting the existing system DSN and recreating it as "SQL Native Client" corrected the issue for me too.

Thanks for clarifying this for me!

    Hi Everyone,

For people who still facing the same problem, I have documented the solution with snapshots as many of my customers seems to face the same problem as well at:

Configured DSN is pointing to an unsupported ODBC driver error while upgrading to vCenter 4.0

I hope this help some one, if it does please reward points.
