Converted Microsoft VM mouse problems

I just converted a microsoft virtual machine (win2k3ent in an MS vm) onto an ESX 3 server and when I startup the new guest in ESX the mouse does not work inside the guest. If I uninstall vmtools, the mouse works. However, if I re-install vmtools, the mouse again does not work.

Anybody got any clues on how to resolve this?

There will be a vmware tools equivalent called "virtual machine additions" that you'll want to uninstall. After that reinstall vmware tools and you should be OK.

For some reason the Microsoft Virtual Machine Additions doesn't uninstall properly.

If the look at the following registry key, you will notice the filter driver for the MSVS mouse - msvmmouf.

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96F-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

UpperFilters REG_MULTI_SZ msvmmouf mouclass

Edit the entry and remove the msvmmouf value.

This has done the trick for me.
