Change root password when original password is NOT known

Hi all, 

I have a vCenter 7.0.2 appliance which I am able to log in with with my AD credentials, however the root password for the appliance is not known and I need to change it. Do I have any options other than to redeploy? All the instructions I can find appear to require the root password of the appliance be known and they only work in cases where the root password has expired.
