I found same phenomenon in knowledge base.
Cannot see any files when browsing datastores in vCenter Server 4.0 when ESX hosts are in Standby Mode (1018767).
These are solved in 4.1 described in this issue.
But we are using all ESXi servers and vCenter of 5.0 and the same phenomenon appears.
