Re: Cannot remove host from cluster

Hi all,

We have a weird problem with some of our ESX-hosts. We have a cluster with 20 hosts, and 5 of them have the option "Remove" grayed out. There seems to be no way to remove them from the cluster the normal way.

I have tried to reboot the vCenter server, the hosts, disconnect and reconnect the hosts, and moved the hosts into a dummy cluster but nothing seems to help. Of course I have put the hosts in maintenance mode first...

The hosts are running ESX 4.0.0 build 236512. The clients and vCenter Server are 4.0.0 build 208111.

Any ideas?

Have ran into tha same problem, and could find no clear solution. You can try:

- Wait some time and the remove option will appear

- Include this hosts in another cluster (you can create one) and then remove the entire cluster, or try removing one by one.

Hi Rayv,

I hopemy ideas will help you to fix that issue.

1.Check out HA configured properly in existing cluster. or

2. power off all the Vm's and put a maintanance mode for the required host(While entering maintanace mode,the HA will work properly or all VM's should be powered off)

3.if you entered maintanance mode successfully,now you can remove the host from cluster

These are the steps I performed to fix this problem:

1. Create a DUMMY cluster

2. Put the hosts which cannot be removed into maintenance mode.

3. Move these hosts to the DUMMY cluster.

4. Destroy the DUMMY cluster.

5. Add the hosts to the original cluster.

Well, they didn't. All you gave were the normal steps for removing a host from a cluster, and I clearly specified that the host was already in maintenance mode.

VMware should really get rid of this point-awarding system...

That fixed my identical issue. I dont know why, but the only hosts that were affected were the ESX3/ESX3i hosts in my vCenter 4.1. Even after upgraded the ESXi3 hosts to ESXi4.1, they could not be removed. bizarre.
