Cannot enter maintenance mode

A few days ago this behaviour suddenly started appearing.

When I tell a host to go into maintenance mode, it does not, but this error message appears:

Failed to enter namespaces maintenance mode due to Error: com.vmware.vapi.std.errors.unauthenticated Messages: vapi.security.authentication.invalid<Unable to authenticate user> . Retry 2

This happens with all three hosts.

Any ideas?

I found this supposed solution: https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/88508

But when I did this the vCenter just completely stopped working. I cannot log in to the vCenter web GUI any more. It tells me I lack the privileges or, depending on page, that it cannot connect to the vCenter server.
