Cannot backup vm using vcbmounter after vmware tools upgrade

Good morning,

I've upgraded the VMware tools to version 3.5.0 Build-130756 on 1 of my Windows 2003 servers. Since then, I have trouble to backup this vm with vcb, I receive the following message, "vcbmounter could not find vitual machine specified by ipaddr". Every morning I see that this vm hasn't been backed up. I noticed that the Restart/Shudown guest options are greyed out in vCenter. In order to back it up, I have to restart the vmware tools service then the Restart/Shutdown options are no longer greyed out and I can run my backup job using vcb without any problem. I tried to uninstall and reinstall the vmware tools yesterday, but the backup didn't work this morning for the same reason as the previous days.

Any idea how I can fix this??

Thanks in advance

Nicolas

First off, try to uninstall and reinstall VMware Tools using a "Complete" install. I know it is supposed to be fixed with current versions of the tools, but I still recommend this method.

Second, you may need to remove it from inventory and re-add it using the

datastore browser to get it registered into vCenter and the "owning"

ESX server.

Third, use the vcbVmName utility to query the VM. You may need to use a MOREF instead of the IPADDR in the vcbMounter string.

If these do not work, run a manual vcbMounter session and add "-L 6" to the line. Attach (do not just copy and paste) the log files to this thread. The logs will be under you %TEMP% directory, which is usally C:\WINDOWS\TEMP.

Hello Dave,

Thanks for the help, I did uninstall/reinstall the tools as you suggested and I removed then re-registered the machine from the datastore. This morning I was pleased to see the backup worked without any problem. If I get the same result tomorrow, I'll consider the problem solved. I'll let you know one way or the other.

Thanks
