Adding a 4th ESX Host

Hi All,

Sorry if this is the wrong section for this question..

We currently have 3 HP BL460 G7 Blade Servers with Intel Xeon 2.93GHz quad core processors - they are part of a single cluster.

Can i add a BL460 G9 server to the cluster (will have intel processors) does this matter?

Thanks

Hi,

if booth are intel cpu´s check the compatibility matrix.

VMware Compatibility Guide - CPU Compatibility for VMware VMotion

Hi samuk,

As long as the new host has been checked and is on the VMware Compatibility Guide - System Search‌ and you are able to enable Enhanced vMotion Compatibility (EVC) processor support (1003212) | VMware KB‌ at the appropriate level, you are technically ok to add to the host to the cluster.

You may experience though performance mismatches of VMs when they migrate (vMotion) between the hosts (The VM running better on the G9 than on the G7), so consistent performance may be at question.

Hope this helps,

Chris

As well as the above, ensure you have enough licenses to cover all CPU sockets on the 4th host.

Thanks all for the replies.

I will check the server is on the compatibility guide.

CPU's will be different, the vm cpu will change on the VM every time the server vmotions across?  is this done on ethe fly (not noticeable)?

Will this impact the users or the server  (performance is not an issues as they are high spec servers)
