Active Directory does not list groups

Working for a university, we have 100,000+ users in one domain in Active Directory. In a 3-level subgroup, there are groups that I would like to use for permissions on folders in vCenter Server. I also found the option and help files on unlimiting the list # and timeout values.

With no limits on AD, the list and search features still do not find any groups I have created. A user in the same folder as the groups appears first, but the groups (with similiar name strings) do not appear. Do the groups in AD need to have special values or characteristics for them to appear in vSphere client / vCenter Server?

Thanks!

It appears that you can type in the following to the groups line and it will accept the name:

\ where GLOBAL_GROUPNAME needs to be a global / security group in Active Directory. I have not tested the permissions but it accepts it as a valid group.

So let me rephrase my question: Why do these groups not appear in the Active Directory search feature?

Thanks!
