2 Virtual machines in VC showing up as greyed out with (invalid) displayed beside them.

I only had one at first. I tried to do "service mgmt-vmware restart" and when it came back in VC I had 2. The odd thing is that both VM's are still up and running.

check the other ESX hosts in your cluster, they may have the same VM in inventory. Even though they both show up as running in VC I would be willing to bet that you have this quest on more than one ESX host. Find the host that has the VM powered off and remove it.

Then restart the mgmt service again on the HOST that has the actual VM powered on.

hope this helps

I have 4 Servers in my cluster. I used the VC client to open each and I only see them on the one box. When looking at them on the box they show up as Unknown(invalid) and Unknown1(invalid).

Make a note of each VM's datastore, then from the ESX Host, remove them from inventory. Disconnect the ESX Host from VC and then remove it. Add it back in, then add the VM back into inventory.... if you can afford the downtime of the VM.

Also, maybe just restarting the vpxa agent on the ESX server will fix it. At the console type:

service vmware-vpxa restart

I tried to restart the vpxa service, still no good. I really would perfer not to have to do the other things you suggested but if I need to it will have to be late at night.

well, if you are running 3.0.2 or above, you can sucessfully disconnect the HOST in question from VC and then remove it without worrying about any of your VMs going down. Removing the HOST from VC and then re-adding it will probably refresh the invalid vm on that host.
