2 VC Servers v. 2.5 & Oracle DB

Hi!

We have, in our environment, 2 vmware infrastructure systems (2 different projects), each one with 1 VC server and multiple ESX servers.
Both use for the database repository 1 oracle instance (Oracle 10).But each VC server use a different db scheme, with a different db user, different DSN, different TNS. The VC Servers v2.0.2 run in this environment without any problems. After update to v2.5, the VC Servers stop running simultaneously. After starting one of them, the second VC Server doesnt want to start. Log File:

I got this answer from VMWare support:

"VirtualCenter is checking at the time of start if another VirtualCenter is on the same database server. This is by design as there were many issues with having several instances of VirtualCenter running against the same database. I know that this was previously working in your environment but it does not work any more.

The ability to run several instances of VirtualCenter against one SQL server has been requested by many of our customers and the code has been rectified so that this will again work.

We hope to see this working again in the next release of VirtualCenter 2.5 update 2. *We hope to see update 2 released within the next couple of months*.

In the meantime all I can do is apologize for the inconvenience."

Any other ideas ?

I've just installed the 2.5.2 version of VCM and have it pointing to a table space in an oracle server.

When trying to start the Virtual Centre Server I get the following errors

SQLExecDirect failed: HY000:6510

Unable to get exclusive access to VC repository. Please check if another VirtualCenter instance is running against the same schema.

It is the only machine using these tables and the table space was setup exclusively for this process to use.

Server may not have started properly, and/or a connection is stuck on the db side. I would restart the vc and db, and reconnect.

Found a pl/sql user lock hanging around in the table space against the vpxadmin user account that I'm using for the connection.

Got rid of this and the service gets a little further along but stlii crashes with another set of errors. I've got a support call open with VMware and we are working on resolving the issue.

I'll post when I get an answer to the current issues.

Hi,

Did you get any more information? I'm having the same problem after upgrading Vcenter to update 2.

Thanks.

Hi,

I also had a similar problem as ddw. I tried restarting the database as kjb has suggested in the thread above and it solved the problem for a day or so and then the problem reoccured. A second restart has solved the problem for now but it would be great if further information on solving the pl/sql lock problem could be posted.

Thanks

Regards

varun
