1. Are redundant FC/iSCSI connections on ESX servers for failover, bandwidth or both?

We are currently installing a new EMC cx-480 SAN in out datacenter. There are multiple fiber channel and iSCSI connections out of the ESX hosts. Are those for failover in casae of NIC or HBA failure is it also provide bandwidth/throughput as well?

Is the best practices always configure storage multipathing.

-For Availability, Vmware recomends a minimum of two paths to a LUN.

-Multiple paths provide both avalability and load balance for performance.

In your case you can configure the minimum of two FC connections for low latency LUNs.

And two iSCSI connections for LUNs that application not require low latency.
