Serial port monitoring

Is there a way to monitor a machine's serial port(s). Unusual nowadays I know but I been asked to find out if this can be done nad how.

What do you want know exactly?
You can write a simple script, that connecting your serial ports: like tera term in win or in linux you can use lots of othertools... watching outputs and you get a value that appearing in hyperic metric value.
