Newbie Questions

Hi,

I would like to ask the following question,

i
'
m using hyperic open source software.

will i be able to monitor agents that are running on a different server?

is this possible or do i have to get the enterprise edition for this one.

As of now, i
'
m able to monitor server that has agent running on it locally.

If it is possible under open source edition,

then what does the feature,
remotely update and administer agent mean

I
'
m trying to understand it

Thanks
Carlo

No, this works perfectly fine with the open source version for up to 50
agents.

That feature allows you to update the HQ agent on your different servers
without having to touch all of them individually. With the open source
edition an agent update means you have to access all servers (via
ssh/remote desktop/whatever), stop the agent, update its installation
and start it again. With the enterprise edition you can do that
centralized via the server's user interface. Much easier, especially
with larger installations.

HTH.

Boris59, you said "No, this works perfectly fine with the open source version for up to 50
agents."

What happens when you go over 50 agents with the open source version?

The number is, I think, not exact. It was just mentioned by the staff on
several occasions and should only indicate a rough limit of what a
single HQ server can handle. As far as I know the Enterprise edition
supports clustering of the server and thus allows larger installations.
Maybe you can very well run 200 agents against a really huge OpenSource
edition server in terms of hardware, but I guess this is where the staff
should give us their 2 cents.

Hi,

if I understand your question correctly yes, you can use your HQ Agent to monitor remote server for example by using SNMP or JMX. But you will not have the full set of features like autodiscovery or all plugins.
