Hardware Monitoring

Total newbie here looking into Hyperic as an easier to configure and use alternative to Nagios.

It looks like Hyperic can handle most of what I want to monitor (100% Linux shop here), but looking through the website material it said nothing on the following topics:

1) Raid Card -- Can Hyperic monitor the status of a 3ware RAID card?
2) Multiple CPUs Temperature -- didn't see this in the list of cpu monitors
3) hard-drive temperature -- Again, didn't see it in any list
4) chassis fan rpm -- Again, didn't see it in any list

Thanks for any insight into the support of these items.

HQ does not include any hardware monitoring plugins "out-of-the-box", but there are some contributed plugins available at http://support.hyperic.com/display/hypcomm/Hardware+Metrics+Plugins that may serve your needs. Most of these were developed by users with information contained in our documentation for extending HQ monitoring found here: http://support.hyperic.com/display/DOC/Plugin+Development+Center.

The general rule is, if there is an interface available for the HQ Agent to grab the information (via script, SNMP, JDBC, etc.), a plugin can be written to incorporate it into HQ. Many of the hardware components you mentioned can be queried via CLI tool (usually provided by the hardware vendor, which could be the target of a script) or SNMP.

Thanks for the help. I'll look into rolling my own to see how hard it is.
