I want to export the HQ inventory, relationships & metric templates in RDF format.
Why? So that richer queries can be produced.
Those queries would power knowledge-based (relationship/graph-based) queries as well as new user interface paradigms such as faceted browsing.
Furthermore, if the RDF dialect used was DCML, then it may help to kickstart that initiative.
The DCML (data centre markup language) can help all management platforms to richly interact. The end-result would be a CMDB-like feature without much effort.
ITILv3 suggests a SKMS - a service knowledge management system. That implies that somehow management tools would co-populate a knowledge-rich system. For a little more information, checkout http://drdox.info/kms/category/nms/
We're working with Hyperic & OpenNMS to help them play their part as federated CMDB data sources - by interchanging the semantic knowledge they've discovered.
If more tools support DCML, then a richer model and visualisation of IT is possible. Something that can truly rival the offerings from the Big 4. The big 4 already model then leverage knowledge bases - at their core. We have the foundations - and it's not unfeasible to start thinking turning up the heat.
