Configuration Manager installation with External DB

Looking into the requirements for installing Configuration Manager.  Typically we like to have a DB configured on an external SQL Server beforehand.  Has anyone tried to install VCM with this method?  It seems the install guide wants you to run the installation on the DB server itself.

For VCM you have to run the installer on the SQL Server for the web tier of the install. The DBs are created by restoring backup files, as there is a lot of programmatic content as well as metadata to them (populating them from scripts would take a lot longer, so that is not an option). There are also connectivity components needed on the SQL Server so VCM DB activities can call back to the Collector system.

So just to make sure, if we use a dedicated SQL server for all of our DB's, this method will most likely NOT work for Configuration Manager, as the installation needs to be run on the SQL Server itself.  Is this true in Two and Three-Tiered installations as well?

You can install the DB part of VCM on a shared SQL Server that is used for other databases. Such an installation should be carefully considered, though, because of both the potential sensitivity of data managed by VCM and because VCM can be a significant load on SQL Server.

However, the installation of VCM's databases and support components on a shared SQL Server will not (other than added competition for capacity) impact other databases/applications installed on that server.

Thanks.  So then I would need to provide our SQL team with the VCM Installation files and have them run it.  Once the DB portion of the install is complete, than we run the install on the Collector/Web Server machine, is this accurate?
