To follow up, the problem seems fixed for me since I installed the VMware Tools on the guest OS. The Tools come with VMWare Workstation. These Tools come with custom drivers for the guest that evidently get rid of a lot of problems. My guest OS is much smoother, the clock is synchronized, and the 5-minute hang hasn't hit me since. Very nice!
