Sounds like a good idea, although step 3+4 are optional if you have a backup in place.
You can't have two versions installed on the same device. However, you may install Workstation Pro, which allows you to run it in evaluation mode for 30 days. After that you can still run the VMs Workstation Player at no cost, assuming it's for non-commercial use.
