No, you cannot have two versions installed at the same time.
Keep your v15 installer, install v16 and test our your VMs. If you upgrade the virtual hardware in the VMs, and you want to revert to v15, make sure you downgrade the virtual hardware in the VMs before uninstalling v16 and reinstalling v15.
