Thanks for your response - you certainly pointed us in the right direction.
We found a product that does redirection of a physical serial port (on a client/host) to a virtual serial port on a VM via TCP. And it appeared to be working for our serial modem!
However using a similar solution from the same vendor (this time USB to TCP redirection) for our gemplus smartcard device the result has been less successful. The smartcard worked for a minute from a VM and then a USB device not recognized error appeared out of no where. Restoring all machines (host and VM) to a working snapshot followed by a reinstallation of the smartcard device and redirection software got things working again - but again, this only lasted for a couple of minutes before the USB device not recognized error got thrown!
Again any help is much appreciated.
